How Teamsters Won the Right to Vote

right_to_vote.jpgTeamster members won the Right to Vote on Supplements and Riders to the NMFA in 1991, after a long campaign by Teamsters for a Democratic Union to win that right.

The effort was spearheaded by Tom Griffith of Local 776, who gave an impassioned speech in favor of the TDU-drafted proposal at the 1991 IBT Convention.Reform delegates enthusiastically supported it.

But many people in the present leadership of the Teamsters Union—including Chuck Mack, Tom Keegel, Jim Santangelo, Jack Cipriani and others on the present General Executive Board—actively opposed giving members this right. Read the rest ...

Freight Contract Vote Results

yellow_freight.jpgMost of the 39,000 votes on the NMFA have been counted, and the national contract is passing by nearly a 2-1 margin. The joint company-union campaign of fear and despair convinced most freight Teamsters that they had to accept it.

In many areas, the majority said No. These include some of our stronger locals, such as Detroit Local 299, Cleveland Local 407, Cincinnati Local 100, Milwaukee Local 200, Rockford Local 325, New Jersey Freight Local 641, Atlanta Local 728, Seattle Local 174, Portland Local 81, San Francisco Local 85, Philadelphia Local 107, Pittsburgh Local 249, and the Central Pennsylvania region.

Sales Job Over; Vote Count Begins

yellow_freight.jpgThe month-long sales job has finally ended. No more robo-calls telling you to vote yes on the contract. No more mailings from Yellow Roadway or ABF with the same script. No more misleading propaganda sent from the International Union.

How many millions in dues dollars were spent on that stuff, anyway?

It’s no secret that times are tough in the freight industry. Instead of uniting freight Teamsters to fight for a strong contract, our union spent our own dues money to peddle fear and uncertainty and try to force through concessions. Read the rest ...

Who Got a Ballot on the Freight Contract?

vote-small.jpgFreight Teamsters have mailed in their ballots, which will be counted on February 8 and 9. But were the voting rolls padded by the International Union as part of their campaign to make sure it gets passed?

Teamsters employed at companies that have never been under the NMFA were sent ballots, companies such as Oak Harbor, Peninsula and Reddaway in the West. They are not under the NMFA, never have been, work under lesser white paper contracts which are not about to expire, and yet they were sent NMFA ballots. Long-retired Teamsters were sent ballots. Teamsters from long-defunct companies were sent ballots. Read the rest ...

ABF Agrees to Match NMFA

abftrailer.jpgAs expected, ABF management has signed a "me-too" to be bound by the National Master Freight Agreement (NMFA).

The ABF me-to means we will retain a united freight contract. This outcome was never really in doubt. The International Union said all along that it would hold ABF to the NMFA—just like it did when other companies including Yellow tried to break away. Read the rest ...

Still Time to Get Out the Vote

gotv.jpg YRC management and Hoffa’s PR Department are working overtime to push through their historic givebacks. But there is still time to get out a No Vote and defeat these concessions.

Teamsters who have not gotten a ballot or lost theirs can still request a replacement by calling their local.

Now is the time to remind your fellow workers to get that ballot in—it's secret, and it will be counted.

All ballots must be received by the post office in Lanham, Maryland by 10 AM on Friday, Feb. 8 to be counted.

One-Two Punch For Protecting the NMFA

“Vote No” Campaign + UPS Freight Organizing

freight_side.jpgThe "Vote No" campaign on the freight contract plus the new organizing at UPS Freight could be a one-two punch to protect Teamster standards in freight.

The proposed freight concessions and the substandard UPS Freight contract in Indianapolis are blows aimed at the heart of Teamster Power: the National Master Freight Agreement.

But there is hope yet for union standards in our industry—thanks to a nationwide Vote No campaign and the growing movement of UPS Freight workers to join our union. Read the rest ...

What Are YOU Doing To Fight These Givebacks?

bulletin_board.jpgAcross the country, Freight Teamsters are passing out leaflets, posting signs in their cabs, scrawling Vote No in the dirt on the back of their trucks—and of course talking Teamster-to-Teamster on the docks, in break rooms, and on CBs and cell phones.

What are you doing to fight these givebacks?
